My setup weighed just under 35 ounces with a Peak Design tripod plate attached. That is not the lightest compact spotter available, but the size-to-performance ratio is still very good—especially considering the optical quality and durability.

The first thing I noticed about the Maven S.2 was its build quality. It feels solid and well made, with rubber armor covering most of the body and metal used for the focus and magnification controls. Is 27x Enough Magnification?
Some people will immediately see the 12–27x range as limiting. In my field use, I found it more capable than the numbers might suggest.
At approximately 653 yards, I had no trouble observing elk and seeing useful detail. I could also clearly identify elk at roughly 1,483 yards while looking toward the sun, although that was not an ideal lighting situation. When I compared the S.2 at 27x with 45x spotting scopes, the higher-powered scopes obviously showed a larger image, but the Maven still provided enough detail to evaluate the animals.
For elk-sized game, I consider approximately 1,250 yards the S.2's sweet spot. It can reach farther, but users who regularly need to judge animals well beyond that distance may prefer a larger scope with more magnification.
A modern phone can extend the practical reach when digiscoping, particularly if the goal is simply to inspect an animal more closely. However, heavy digital zoom reduces image quality. For cleaner photos and video, I generally try to keep the phone's digital magnification below approximately 5x or 6x.
Digiscoping With the Maven S.2
The S.2 works very well as a compact digiscoping platform. Its smooth focus system makes it easier to fine-tune the image without shaking the entire setup, while the bright center image helps the phone capture usable footage in a range of conditions.
I used an iPhone 15 with the Ollin Snapshot system during my testing. The quick attachment is valuable in the field because I can remove the phone to look through the scope normally and snap it back into position when I want to capture footage. A fast adapter matters when an animal may only remain visible for a few seconds.

Compared with the Vortex Viper HD, the Maven is a clear optical step up. I also found the Maven's focus system faster and smoother than the controls on the Vortex scopes I tested.
The Maven S.2 cannot fully match premium compact scopes from Kowa or Swarovski, but it costs considerably less. That makes it a compelling alternative for someone who wants strong optical performance without moving into the highest price tier.
Warranty, Customer Service, and Resale Value
Maven backs the S.2 with its unconditional lifetime warranty. My experiences with Maven's customer service have been positive: the company responds quickly and has been helpful whenever I needed something.
Resale value is a different story. In my experience, Maven optics do not retain their value as well as better-known products from Vortex or Swarovski. That is probably less about the quality of the optic and more about brand recognition and Maven's direct-to-consumer business model. As more people become familiar with Maven, its resale market may improve, but buyers should not assume they will recover the same percentage of the purchase price that they might with a Swarovski.

It is also a strong option for people who usually observe animals inside approximately 1,250 yards. Within that range, the 27x ceiling did not feel overly restrictive to me, particularly with elk and other large animals.
Long-range users who routinely need more than 27x, or those who demand excellent sharpness from the center to the very edge of the image, should consider a larger or more expensive scope.
